Kym Tucker is not only someone that I have fallen back to many, many times as a coach, confidant, and friend she is also someone a have gone to on more than one occasion for advice, direction and grounding. I asked her to share something with me that I could share with others and yet again she shone on the task. Thanks Kym… MWAH!

I recently had termites feasting in my home and the little bugger’s had nibbled away slowly and methodically for years whilst I went merrily about my way totally oblivious. It initially horrified me then moved me into action mode. I first had to clear the clutter so I could get close to assessing the damage. Wow it builds up (or multiplies as a friend told me) and I wanted to get rid of everything but instead I set about sorting through my accumulated ‘stuff’. Do I need it? Do I want it? Does it enhance my life?
With a clear space a pest inspector determined the treatment and a builder followed to replace the damage. A good strong foundation is important in everything and I hadn’t noticed mine slowly crumbling beneath the surface. I started to wonder what else in my life may not be as solid as I perceived. When I really looked there were lots of things…wow, where do I start? Well to be congruent with what I teach ‘one step at a time’.
I wasn’t doing all the things I wanted to be doing. I didn’t need to discard all the ‘stuff’, more a re-jig in my plan and definitely the implementation as I am much more comfortable in the planning stage than the (very necessary) action phase.
But this isn’t about me…it’s about a process which may help you move towards your own personal or business success or whatever it means for you to live a fulfilling, amazing life. To simplify a really complex interaction between you and your world here are 3 areas you may want to consider.
Look closely at where you are now?
Look around and what do you see? Who are the key people in your life? What are your surroundings? What is working? What isn’t working? What is your uniqueness? What makes you feel good? What are your passions? What successes have you already experienced? What do you love to spend your time doing? What are your skills? What are your natural abilities? What challenges have you overcome? What are you grateful for?
Assess your foundations and determine what is sound and what needs rebuilding.
Where are you going?
What bits in your life do you want to change? What does your destination look like? Who are the people you want around you? What do you want to spend your time doing? Paint a really clear picture about what you want in your life (or a certain part of it) incorporating what you want to keep and the changes you desire.
What path will you create to get there?
What is your plan to get there? I believe a ‘one size fits all’ success program only works for the one person who fits the plan! This is good news! Why? Because if you have tried one or many of these and they didn’t work for you, you are not alone! So what do you need to do to reach your goals?
I believe we each need to create and follow our own path! That doesn’t mean you need to throw out all of the plans, programs, books and advise you have already, but you may want to sort them. from an educational perspective and take the ‘bits’ which fit your values, beliefs and desires. Einstein said, ‘To punish me for my contempt for authority, fate made me an authority myself.’ You are the best authority for your life and no one, regardless of their status, has the right to design it for you. Your plan to achieve your dreams is as unique as you are and although there may be similarities to others, yours will be in your flavour.
The tricky bit…well this will be different for everyone. It is possibly the same thing which has tripped you up in the past, in a different guise. So where to start? Where you are now is as good a place as any, focus on your desired vision then take a step forward. What will your steps be? Well they will come from your plan. And where will your plan come from? You! Maybe spend time on the things mentioned above, bits and pieces from your life, your favourite authors, friends, family and mentors. It doesn’t have to be a complex plan…start small, choose one bit to focus on and build as you go.
Are you getting some ideas? We are complex beings and we don’t have to do the journey alone…most successful people don’t, so find people around you whom you trust, someone who will help you get out of your own way, encourage you, support you and hold your vision with you. Take a deep breath and embrace your path, the one which will enable you to express who you are and what you want to achieve as part of your purpose for being here…your celebration of life and what you have to offer yourself and the world. Make a start…you are worth it!
A final word on my house…Termites are gone and timber replaced. I am now procrastinating about having walls painted and floor boards sanded and polished. Packing everything up, moving furniture and sanding dust everywhere is not at all appealing. Here I go again, not wanting to go through the hard bit to get to the fabulous end result. Of course I could choose to leave it as it is (the easier path at the moment) until the pain of the leaving it becomes greater than the pain of having it done (maybe this is a habit I need to address!).
